I witnessed a Train Crash....!

OK, well what can I say about today.... I put the equivalent of sand, water and wet concrete in my tank. :-(

Breakfast was kinda normal, poached eggs on toast. My favorite meal!

It all went horribly wrong with a 50 cent cone from "Micky D", and I thought that I would try a frozen raspberry drink, because I have never tried one before. (I was not surprised to find that it tasted like pure sugar)

Then, on the way to MONA on the ferry, I shared a small packet of chips and a cola drink!

And THEN SHARED.... Chicken & Chorizo Paella, then a hamburger and bratwurst with my wife at MONA.

And to totally wipe out the day, a hokey pokey icecream and a coffee in Salamanca.

Now I really need to jog from Tranmere up to the top of Mt Wellington, but I am too tired :-(

Tomorrow is another day, and I am FULLY aware that I need to make up for today.

Sweet dreams everyone!

Eeeeeeek!

The "DREADED E NUMBER" <- Danger!!! Or is it?

The word on the street, is that food manufacturers are adding things!! into our food to make it last longer, taste better, resist germs..... just to name a few. BUT, without an index of what these numbers mean, we have no idea about what we are putting into our engines.

There are lots of resources that will assist online, so I am going to do some research to find out what are the bad ones, and what can be considered harmless.

E100-199 are basically all "colours" of the rainbow!
E200-299 Preservatives. Cause you can never have enough of these bad boys...
E300–399 Antioxidants & acidity regulators. What about alkaline regulators!!!
E400–499 Thickeners, stabilisers & emulsifiers. Ewwwwww!
E500–599 pH regulators & anti-caking agents. Cake's nemesis, anti-cake!
E600–699 Flavour enhancers. We use crap ingredients, and add these so you will eat our food.
E700–799 Antibiotics. What, no narcotics?
E900–999 Miscellaneous. They hide the dangerous killer ones here :-)
E1100–1599 Additional chemicals. Like napalm and agent orange... they go in here.

How about E941? Well, it's nitrogen! So pretty harmless. It's used in packets of lettuce, to stop it oxidising.

Same goes for:
E938 Argon
E939 Helium
E942 Nitrous oxide
E948 Oxygen
E949 Hydrogen

What about these ones then?
E1442 Hydroxy propyl distarch phosphate. I am sure that it is needed.
E1202 Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone. Goes very well with grapefruit!
E433 Polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate. Oh yummy!

Anyway, take a moment and do a little research yourself... get acquainted with the exact chemicals that you are polluting your body with!

This is fascinating stuff, I will keep researching and share with you any extra juicy bits (E416).

Eating nothing but air...

Today's breakfast just kept on giving. Baked beans on toast! Maybe I should just stop writing now, because you can imagine what happened!!

Seriously though, big plate of baked beans on Tash's wonderful toast, with butter, and I was not hungry 7 hours later.
Baked beans are packed with protein (and air) and are so tasty.

Dinner tonight was a fantastic Chicken Cacciatore served with rice, Thermomix style. Thanks AGAIN to Tash. Heaps of veggies, olives, yummo!

I have cooked up some sushi rice today, and later on tonight I will make up some tuna sushi rolls for lunch tomorrow.

Did I mention that I am now 5kg down! In only 7 days, go me!

Cheers till tomorrow.

Sunday super shake....

Hey peeps, did you all get a wonderful sleep in? I was up at the crack of 10:15am... The sun was already up waiting for me.

Not only that, but Tash had prepared the most tasty breakfast smoothie, here is the recipe for two people to share:

1 cup of frozen blueberries
1/2 cup of protein powder
3/4 cup of greek yoghurt
700 ml low fat milk
Good squirt of honey

Now, there is a lot of energy in that, so we hit the walking track and have completed a 5km walk and grabbed some vitamin D while we were out. Must take water next time... Hot and dry now...

For a super tasty lunch snack, how about a tuna, mayo and cheese toasted wrap! OMG the smokey tuna is just sublime. Not much in the way of carbs, but more energy that will need to be burned.

Now to clean up the house, and then hit the beach and do a spot of fishing.... fish for dinner would top off a brilliant day.

Because it is such a nice day, I am hoping that we can do a twilight walk and watch the sun duck behind Mt Wellington.....

UPDATE: It was just after 10PM tonight, the wife and I went for another walk around our suburb. What a beautiful night. It is never too late.....

A simple day today.... Carpe Simplicia

Yummo, we are going to a friends place for dinner tonight!

My meal plan today has consisted of Thermomix homemade fresh bread made by Tash (Wife), two poached eggs (vitamin pills) for breakfast with a strong cappuccino with Rapadura sugar (Raw unprocessed cane sugar). As with all days, I am taking a good quality pharmacy vitamin tablet, to try and ensure my engine gets all the goodies it needs.

Lunch was simply a few flathead fillets, dusted with flour, curry powder and a little salt.

I don't have any food cravings at the moment, we will see how the day pans out.

Simple = fun, easy, natural and healthy.

A hard pill to swallow.... Carpe Ovo

Here I am again, just a quick update on my "special vitamin tablet" that I enjoy taking more than any other pill.

Chicken Eggs! OMG, If I could eat 6 eggs a day I would. I cooked some runny centre poached eggs for breakfast on grain bread, and I can honestly say that the meal sustained me for about 7 hours.

Wikipedia: "Eggs laid by females of many different species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, have been eaten by mankind for millennia. Bird and reptile eggs consist of a protective eggshell, albumen (egg white), and vitellus (egg yolk), contained within various thin membranes."

Egg yolks and whole eggs store a lot of protein and choline. For this reason, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) categorizes eggs as Meats within the Food Guide Pyramid.

Chicken eggs are the most commonly eaten eggs. They supply all essential amino acids for humans, and provide several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid (vitamin B9), vitamin B6, vitamin B12, choline, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. They are also an single-food source of protein.

A large yolk contains more than two-thirds of the recommended daily intake of 300 mg of cholesterol (although one study indicates that the human body may not absorb much cholesterol from eggs)."

Great feedback... The power of social networks.

It's encouraging that the blog is getting so many hits, I suppose that this is due to the immense power of social networking sites.

I have had some comments, some emails and phone calls from people who are reading this Blog which is fantastic.

The concept I am trying to convey is, if you are not happy with the way something is going for you, make "a" change, large or small. If you feel a certain way (down, depressed or happy), it is because YOU are feeling that way! And, only you can CHANGE that. You can decide how you feel.

We all react to situations every day, in hundreds of different ways. People with a positive outlook on like can make good of any situation.

The following situation was explained to me, which happened to two different people. The outcomes for each person was so dramatically different, that it should make anyone think about how they react.

Please picture if you will:
It is a beautiful sunny morning, there is not a cloud in the sky and it is 23 degrees, perfect right?

Mary is getting ready for a picnic in the park with all her friends, she has been planning and preparing for this for weeks. Her mood is electric, she has not been so happy for months, waiting to see old friends again.

Bob has been up since 6am tending to his livestock, it has been a hard slog for the past few months. The days are long and hot, and he constantly is worried about his farm, animals and money which allows him to provide for his family and keeps the bank at bay.

Now, Bob and Mary only live 30km from each other, and at about 11am the clouds start to roll in and it begins to rain.... hard... Rain like the area has not seen in years.

Mary is devastated... Her day is ruined, she is inconsolable and spends the rest of the day in tears. She curses the rain, and her family bear the brunt of her anger.

Bob on the other hand feels a huge weight lift from his shoulders, he will not tell you this, but he cried with joy. Things are looking up now, and he spends the day walking and working in the rain, allowing the large drops to soak his clothes through. Tonight he can even enjoy a long hot shower.

In this example, the exact same event occurred to two people, and had dramatically different outcomes.

It's how we react, that makes the difference to our lives, and the lives of those closest to us.

Catchy ad, but it's the wrong fuel. Carpe movere.

OK, so I almost got tricked into putting the wrong fuel in my tank. There was an ad playing on local FM radio station for a caramel shake, and my brain said sure, lets go there now and try one.

The problem with this, is that consciously I DID NOT THINK this was such a red hot idea. My brain was automatically driving me to the local outlet.
After three minutes of my two brains arguing, and me trying to drive the car, I decided to switch my brain off and I phoned a friend.

"G'day mate, how are you... How's the family.... yadda yadda."

Well, thankfully two things happened. The part of my brain that stops me from crashing the car, thoughtfully and efficiently drove me home, whilst I talked to my friend. Secondly, the fact that I am male, and can only really DO one thing at a time, stopped dreaming of the caramel shake and saved me from the bad fuel.

Now I was very hungry when I got home, as it was about 2pm, and not had anything since cereal and banana for breakfast at 8am.
I got in the house and made myself another roast chicken sandwich. WIN WIN.

All in all another successful day feeding my engine. I did discover that I had dropped another 0.8Kg since yesterday.

A busy work day... Carpe Vinum

OK, I had a brilliant weekend, but now it is back to the daily grind. WORK!

I move from job to job all over southern Tasmania, and never used to plan what I would have for lunch. Normally just buying stuff from shops along the way. Sometimes I don't get to eat for hours, and when I do get somewhere that sells food, I mostly have been eating JUNK!

So, to curb this issue, I now keep a stash of good fuel in the car. My wife also made me a nice lunch to take today. Banana, Peach, container of mixed nuts and a bag of chick peas. I also made a roast chicken sandwich. (I did remove the skin)

How many calories are in this? Who cares! That is the whole point!
It is ALL good quality food that I eat when I am hungry. However, I AM taking note that I eat smaller meals more regularly, and ensuring that I do not over eat.

Tonight we will do our standard 5km walk, I am feeling very good!

I am not getting excited about this aspect, but I am down 4kg now in the past week. It is just an added bonus of putting the right fuel in my tank! (Remember, this is not a D#%T)

Anything goes, in moderation...

Last night I enjoyed a birthday party at a friends house.
I had a little bit of everything, including dessert, and I do not feel guilty, bad or concerned!

I have never been a big drinker, but I had a bourbon and coke as well.

This morning, I have enjoyed some free range eggs on grain bread with butter. Oh, and lets not forget a double shot coffee.

I have remembered to take a multivitamin, and I am now set for the day.
I am looking forward to a long walk and discovering something new on our wonderful planet. I know that I HAVE to burn some extra energy today after last night.

For me, this is a changing my perception about food, eating and getting moving. It is not a d#%t. (Four letter words are censored)

Carpe Cibos (Latin: Seize the Food)

Edit: So far today I have just walked 8.5km... A great start to the day.

Putting the wrong fuel in the tank

It's funny, but I am very particular about what fuel I put in our cars. The Subaru ONLY gets 98RON, and the Cruiser ONLY gets 91RON, and I take particular care that I don't accidently put diesel in it. Arghhhh!

Now for those of you who do not realise, a car will also run on a large number of other fuels, solvents and chemicals. A petrol vehicle will "run" on Kerosene, Aviation fuel, X55 cleaning solvent just to name a few. A diesel vehicle will run on chip oil, olive oil and other waste oils.
These fuels will eventually decrease the life expectancy of the engine.

My body will also run on a large number of fuels, taking energy derived from carbohydrates, fiber, fats, proteins, organic acids, polyols, and ethanol. These all release energy during respiration, this is often called 'food energy'.

Now the types of fuel that I have been putting into my body, could literally destroy my engine beyond repair.

Why do I let this happen? I do not dream of doing it to my car, and that can easily be repaired!

For the next few months I am going to endeavor to carefully monitor the types and quantity of fuel that I put into MY tank.

Unlike our cars that I cannot overfill with fuel, I know that my body will very easily convert unused sugar / carbohydrates into fat. My body does find it a lot more difficult to process protein, so I will more than likely be eating more lean meats, fish, eggs and legumes.

I discover the secret to weight loss, that many people seem to not understand.

"You have to burn more energy than you consume" <- That is it, there is nothing more to it. Accept this weight loss FACT and live it. Eat what you like, but be prepared to ALWAYS burn energy more than you put in.

I have been conscious of doing this for the past 5 days, and I have dropped 3Kg.

I have also changed my mantra from;

1. "I want to go back to Taekwondo" to "I am returning to Taekwondo in February"
2. "I want to lose 25Kg by Christmas" to "I HAVE to look after my engine"
3. "I am too fat to do X" to "I am so looking forward to doing X soon"
4. "You cannot eat X, it will make you fat" to "Is this the best fuel to put in my tank?"
5. "Geez I look fat in these clothes" to "I am looking forward to replacing my wardrobe"

If I don't look after myself, how can I help look after someone else?

I have not had to make major changes to my thinking to effect these changes.... I have not even been exercising. I am so looking forward to being healthier and more active in the near future.

Simple steps, small steps..... necessary steps.

Diet is a four letter word.

There comes a time of realisation, that diet's just don't work, they certainly are only a short term fix for a bigger problem. How we think about food.

There is not one diet that works for everyone!

Only the individual can change how they think about food and the way they fuel their body.
